WASHINGTON (YBH.ME) – The number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan this year has surpassed the number killed in 2007 and 2008 combined.

A total of 272 U.S. servicemen and women were killed in the war in Afghanistan in 2007 and 2008. With today’s troop deaths, the number of U.S. troops killed in 2009 surpasses that number.  So far 278 soldiers have been killed in 2009.

Operation Enduring Freedom Commander General Stanley McChrystal has called on Congress and the President to send as many as 40,000 new troops to Afghanistan to buttress American forces already on the ground. This would be in addition to the 20,000 already approved at the beginning of the year. The White House has yet to act on General McChrystal’s request.

A website called ICasualties.org keeps an up to date tally of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.  So far 908 U.S. deaths have occurred in central Asia in the 8 year war.  1,494 coalition soldiers have been killed in the country across all countries since 2001.
