BOSTON (YBH.ME) – 20 per cent, sometimes more,  of the liquid natural gas used for winter heating comes in through Boston’s port.  On the heels of December 25′s averted air disaster,  Boston Mayor  Thomas Menino is exploring legal means for blocking Yemini-derived shipments.   In a recent interview, the mayor said, “we’re in extraordinary times that call for extraordinary measures to ensure the safety of our city,” continuing, “they cannot be coming into a harbor like Boston, where there is less than 50 feet between the tankers and residential areas.’’

Coast Guard officials have  said they have not yet decided whether the shipments will be allowed to enter the harbor and dock.  Heretofore, countries sending LNG to Boston are Abu Dhabi, Australia and Algeria.   The concern “is the safety and security of the Port of Boston,’’ said Coast Guard spokesman Jeff Hall.

Concerns have been heightened upon re-consideration of  a 2004 report by former counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke, who wrote that officials had “learned that Al Qaeda operatives had been infiltrating Boston by coming in on liquid natural gas tankers from Algeria.’’
