LOS ANGELES (YBH.ME) – Outside the major urban areas, British unemployment is above the nationwide 8 per cent. So when Nicole Mamo submitted an advertisement seeking applicants for a modest cleaning job, she was shocked when the ad was not posted by the local unemployment office.
Mamo runs a worker placement service that staffs work sites with temporary and permanent employees. The reason her ad did not run? It asked that the prospective employee be “very reliable,” which was ruled discriminatory by the Jobs Centre Plus (British Unemployment Office) to which she submitted the ad for posting. According to Mamo, a representative “said it was because they could have cases against them for discriminating against unreliable people.”
Mamo spoke about the issue to the U.K.’s Telegraph newspaper. ”We are taking people off the dole and finding them jobs, so not displaying the advert just seems absolutely ridiculous to me.”
The Campaign Against Political Correctness, a British-based group dedicated to publicizing such absurdities, stated, “if they can’t advertise for what they actually want then the system is broken. They won’t be able to find workers who meet their criteria.”
