9/11 Truthers, Debra Medina and Tea Parties

Today, on the Glenn Beck radio program, Texas gubernatorial candidate Debra Medina was asked about rumors that she is a 9/11 truther.  She was asked, point blank, whether or not the US Government was involved in bring down the World Trade towers.  Her response is not just disheartening, it is pathetic:

She calls herself an “everyday, ordinary person…” and then gives the most political and politically correct answer the world has ever seen.  She aggressively tried to defend her position, and digs the hole even deeper.  Or, is it, that she shows her real character with more clarity?

I am not a truther.  I have looked at the 9/11 truther’s purported evidence, and I see no value in it.  They have convinced me in no way, and I openly question their motives and their intentions.

Debra Medina has painted herself a Tea Party candidate.  Tea Parties are about The Consitution, Capitalism, Ficsal Responsibility and Smaller Government.  I accept that Medina may be for those things, I accept the fact that Truthers may be part of the Tea Party Movement, and I can not ask them to leave. However, they will never get my vote, and I will not allow candidates to publicly take the mantle of Tea Party member, and spew this nonsense.

Debra Medina made her decisions.  Her candidacy may or may not be over.  However, her aligning herself with the Tea Parties as a candidate is.

Radio host Tony Katz is a Capitalist, an American and a Believer. He has been a Los Angeles Tea Party organizer and speaker that has helped spearhead the growing movement and navigate its direction. His show, The Tony Katz Radio Spectacular, is a one-hour daily show that positions the concepts of freedom, liberty and capitalism in proper context. Focusing on “right vs. wrong”, instead of “right vs. left”, the show features talks on trending topics and constitutional issues. Tony can be heard in Tampa Bay, FL on 1340 AM WTAN, in Little Rock, AR on 880 AM KLRG and online at All Patriots Media.

Medina Campaign Responds to Glenn Beck Interview
by Debra Medina on Feb 11, 2010

I was asked a question on the Glenn Beck show today regarding my thoughts on the so-called 9/11 truth movement. I have never been involved with the 9/11 truth movement, and there is no doubt in my mind that Muslim terrorists flew planes into those buildings on 9/11. I have not seen any evidence nor have I ever believed that our government was involved or directed those individuals in any way. No one can deny that the events on 9/11 were a tragedy for all Americans and especially those families who lost loved ones.

The question surprised me because it's not relevant to this race or the issues facing Texans. This campaign has always been about private property rights and state sovereignty. It is focused on the issues facing Texans. It is not a vehicle for the 9-11 truth movement or any other group.

The real underlying question here, though, is whether or not people have the right to question our government. I think the fact that people are even asking questions on this level gets to the incredible distrust career politicians have fostered by so clearly taking their direction from special interests instead of the people, whether it's Rick Perry and his HPV mandate or Kay Hutchison and voting for the bank bailout. It is absolutely the right and duty of a free people to question their government. Texas does not need another politician who tells you what you want to hear, then violates your liberties and steals your property anyway. I fully expect to be questioned and to be held accountable as Governor, and that's the underlying issue here: should people be questioning their government. And the answer is yes, they should be.

  • Pamela

I felt she sounded nervous from the beginning of the interview. I think she was very shocked by such an irrelevant question, didn't have a prepared response, and was afraid of offending some of her supporters….without remembering MOST of us aren't truthers. It happens to the best of us. I was prepared to "dump" her myself, but her press release seems satisfactory enough.

    http://www.medinafortexas.com/getPost?p=272

Without her, I have no candidate, and she still stands for everything I believe in.

    • Ed Norton

Well stated, Pamela. Whatever happened to freedom of speech in this Country? Oh, it's only if you tow some "standard line". So if you think JFK was an inside job, you're also nuts? How would we know about Kennedy OR 9/11, since the Presidents at the time REFUSED to have an investigation? So the real truth will never be known and all the evidence that many have seen point to tacit knowledge that 9/11 would happen at best.

  • Jim Duncan

Sounded like she was filibustering to me. Why filibuster on something as ridiculous as being a 9/11 Truther. She hurt herself today, no question.

  • William

She's nuts. I'm glad this came out before I voted for her. I'm not a big fan of Beck, but I salute him here and thank him for exposing her.

    • Sam

If this is really what changes your vote, don't cry when your property taxes continue to rise, your roads are all tolled, your job is for the government, and your wages buy you nothing.

Debra Medina is the only legitimate conservative. She actually understands the basis of a free and prosperous society. The people will certainly get the government that they deserve.

    • Free_Texan

The rational 9/11 truthers are just asking for a legitimate inquiry. The mistrust of the government story is based on large holes in the story and apparent cover up. Knowing the Bush/Cheney quest for secrecy, it would appear that a few of them let the events happen to allow the attack of Iraq or they really screwed up and didn't want to owe up to it.

The same pattern appears with the underroo bomber. The official story has changed six- to nine times, but the Haskells' story has remained the same. And all they have asked is for the Dutch to release the footage of the events at the airport. And please don't tell me that there are no security cameras in that part of the airport.

  • Jackstraw

A non answer turns into a big deal what gives? I don't buy the 9/11 truther jazz either because the government is too incompetent to do anything remotely that fancy. For Goodness sakes they can't count votes or issue drivers licences efficently what would make anyone believe they could pull 9/11 off. But the belief that the government would not murder it's own citzens for political motives is not only foolish but down right …ignorant. I suggest studying history if that's your reason. But…who cares. She does'nt have an opinion on the issue what's the big deal. The state media jumps all over it because they can't argue against her because most of them don't have an original thought in their head. Perry and KBH are establishment cranks that don't threaten the order so they naturally support them. Medina does threaten the trough and three cheers to her for that alone.

I agree I was quite flabbergasted by glens response,he is ready to throw her under the bus because of a non answer and a stupid question at that.
If we are going to throw everyone under the bus because they don't answer a question in a certain way,we are in trouble my friends we are running out of candidates.

      • James

Glenn is controlled opposition. Just like Palin. If either of them really believed in freedom, they would be the first to be endorsing Medina on property taxes, gun rights, and state sovereignty.

"… the government is too incompetent to do anything remotely that fancy."

In "Incompetent Government Employees: the PsyOp", I point out that this kind of 'reasoning' comes from people who simultaneously believe their military (made up of government employees) is nearly omnipotent, and that if "their guy" gets into political power, he'll "fix" everything.

The Tea Party is about questioning government on taxes, healthcare, debt, etc. — except when it's hiding behind the American flag? It's our flag, not theirs.

  • sam wheat

It was an obvious hit job by beck. He is a big supporter of Perry for Gov of Texas. Not 5 minutes after the interview Perrys campaign was sending robo calls to prospective voters telling them Medina is a 911 truther. Dirty politics any way one slices it. Medina's popularity is a threat to the status quo and charachter assasination is all too common. Unfortunately many people fall for it and we get the worst not the best.

  • Jack

Glenn Beck is an INSIDE JOB!

This has Karl Rove written all over it. Total set up. Its a no win question Because she does have "truthers" voting for her. It was meant to bring her down either way!

She should have chastised him for asking such a ridiculous question, and hung up.

Debra. Medina is not a 911 Truther – whatever that means. What she said is true. There ARE Questions. Not so crazy when you look into it. Even the 911 Commission heads admit they were set up to fail, and were lied to by the Pentagon. So there ARE questions. Did the "govt" do it? Is this even a rational question? Who founded the Mujaheddin? Did the "Govt" lie and use the Gulf of Tonkin to justify Vietnam? Did Govt's cover up what happened on the USS Liberty to justify the 6 day war? The USS Maine? the RMS Lusitania? Did Hitler burn the Reichstag and blame it on a patsy? What are we talking about here? This is what Govts are famous for doing. So to think they might do so on 911… Its just a question. A question that some very influential people have asked.

Debra is our ONLY HOPE in Texas. And if she can recover from this obvious hatchet job and win… the rest of the country will witness how we can all take back our country – one state at a time.

Glen Beck raises a lot of good questions about many important issues. This question that he posed to Medina, however, is not one of them. It has absolutely nothing to do with anything of importance to Texas. Why not ask her if she is a Christian, or a Muslim? How about if she believes that God created the world in six days or if he did it over a billion years, or even if God exists at all? The point is that none of these questions (including Beck's) have anything to do with the important issues of this election. They, and many others, are all emotionally charged issues that are used by skillful tongue-waggers like Glen Beck to divide the opposition. In this case, Debra Medina and her supporters are the opposition to Mr. Beck's obvious support of Governor Rick Perry. It is truly pathetic how such huge sums of money are spent on smear tactics. It shows that those who resort to such strategies don't have any unique solutions to add to the vital issues at hand. I am certainly not a truther but I do not trust my government to watch out for my welfare. One thing for sure about Glen Beck is that he resorts to character assassination on a constant basis. Am I the only one who is troubled by the relentless ridicule that he doles out on a daily basis? Yes, he brings up good questions and has many good observations, but he also mocks good, decent people for political reasons and I believe that is exactly what he has done here with Debra Medina. He set Debra up, and then, in his own savvy, pathetic way, gloated over the lack of what he thought she should have said. What a jerk! Debra Medina is the only candidate that is addressing the issues that the vast majority of Texas politicians eternally evade. She has my vote. I hope she mops up the opposition in March.

As the tea party coalesces and its "leader(s)" emerge from this grass roots movement, I'll be surprised if the nation isn't where it first started — with a need for a grass roots tea-party-like movement. Just occurred to me, doesn't have much to do with Medina's gaff.

  • Jason

9/11 is one of those issues thats so emotionally charged that no one has the right answers or opinion. What is sick is that people will use 9/11 issue in such manipulative ways. That, in my honest opinion is what is an insult to surviving families of loved ones who had died from that tragic event.

    Some people truely are sick..

I still support Debra. This is a non-issue. People who make it an issue outgh to be ashamed.

    1. Deborah Medina is a 9/11 truther conspiracy theorist nut, and has a staff of them working for her. If you don't disagree with the tin foil hat conspiracist it's not really a leap to say you are a closeted one.
    2. Deborah Medina wants to get rid of the property tax. Sounds great, until you realize that this means an increased sales tax, and an income tax to make up the deficit. Income and spending fluctuate wildly, so you can't make a good solid foretasted budget off of those. This leads to deficit budgets like many other states with the same system.
    3. Property tax HURTS to pay. That's good, we Texans hate taxes, so we fight increased property taxes. That keeps our government leaner and meaner than most states, and we are better able to ride through recessions. It's easier to bleed citizenry through income and sales tax because they can inch them up easier.

If Deborah Medina is the face of the tea party movement in Texas then count me out. I'm as small government, pro business as they come, but reality must come into play somewhere.

Glenn Beck normally broadcasts from New York. Who told him Medina was a 9/11 Truther? Palin/Perry? Beck is friends with Palin. They both work for Fox. Palin is hugely associated with the Tea Party movement, but didn't support the candidate who appeals to the Tea Party voters. She endorsed Perry, who is viewed by a large number of Tea Partiers as an incumbent who is part of the problem. What gives? Did radio host Michael Berry put a bug in Beck's ear? Berry has appeared on Beck's TV program in the past and Beck used to host a radio show in Houston. He knows Berry.

Where did this conspiracy theory question of a national nature come from? Why did Beck zero in on it? Where were questions about illegal immigration's effect on Texas, the economy in Texas, security issues in Texas as a terrorist target, energy issues, health care reform solutions for Texans, state sovereignty, etc.? It very quickly became a "gotcha" moment. Too quickly. I'm just sayin'. (to quote Beck)

As a conservative I am offended when a "talk show host" becomes rude and insulting towards a guest that has agreed to be interviewed. I don't like the practice of talking over someone when they are answering a question or belittling someone that holds an opposing view. Beck has historically "made fun of" people that were willing to help him make his living by talking with him. He attacked Medina on a question that has little to nothing to do with the governor's race in Texas, I have questions about 9/11 but I do not believe there was a government conspiracy to cause or cover up the tragedy that has affected the world. Beck's question caught Medina off guard, she stumbled around and said too much but she did not have a tela-prompter guiding her with the PC / appropriate answer. Medina offers Texas a chance to put career politicians on notice…… we have been robbed by your self-serving greed and back room deals long enough. Spain once flew it's flag over Texas but it has been gone for a long time and I don't want Perry selling any part of our state to a foreign entity that would force us to pay to drive on any road in Texas. KBH did not resign her seat in the U.S. Senate to run for governor so she has a back up plan, just in case. I wonder who she will endorse if she is not in a run off race in April? Can anyone see her not supporting the incumbent? So , my argument stands on this point ; Do we want to continue to reward career politicians with re-elections or require elected officials to serve their constituents and learn to become " public servants " ?
