WASHINGTON, D.C. (YBH.ME) – Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) told MSNBC today that “I am confident that when it comes back from the conference committee that that [anti-abortion] language won’t be there.”

Pundits have put forth that the amendment added by Michigan Democrat Bart Stupak to prohibit abortion coverage in the “public option” was the linchpin that pulled the fragile coalition of left and moderate Democrats together.  The house bill passed by the narrowest of margins with a 220-215 final tally in a vote held late Saturday night in the House.  A health care bill now has to make its way through the Senate where passage of a mirror to H.R. 3962 seems unlikely.  Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said H.R. 3962 would be “dead on arrival,” in the senate.

Ms. Wasserman Schultz’s mentioning of the Stupak amendment was likely made to pacify those on the left that are already attacking the amendment, but may cause trouble with the so-called moderate “Blue Dog Democrats.”   Many of the Blue Dogs hail from moderate to heavily-republican districts and fear voter backlash in 2010.  Ms. Wasserman Schultz voted Saturday night for the bill with Mr. Stupak’s amendment in it.
