4:28 PST – AP reports that additional suspects released from custody.
4:25 PST – Fox has cousin of shooter on the air, claims Nidal Hasan was “harassed” over Islamic faith in military. Cousin calls Hasan “good American.”
4:21 PST – Fox reports shooter made anti-U.S comments over war in Middle East to fellow officers.
4:00 PST -YBH! has learned that the Fort Hood shooter, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, graduated from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences with a Master of Public Health Program in June of 2008. Uniformed Services University is part of the Military Health System and is located in Bethesda, Maryland.
3:36 PST – Fort Hood Press Conference expect before 4:00 pm PST.
3:27 – 3:35 PST – Hasan may have been recently reassigned from Walter Reed Hospital. Hasan was promoted to Major in May of this year.
3:06 – 3:26 PST – Fort Hood still on lock-down. Fort Hood is the largest U.S. Military base. 340 square miles. CNN: “Nidal Malik Hasan was a psychiatrist on the base.”
2:47 – 3:05 PST – House of Representatives holds a moment of silence on the House floor. Texas Governor Rick Perry holding a press conference. Perry claims three shooters involved.
2:39 – 2:46 PST – The shooter was a convert to Islam from Virginia. Ft. Hood: “Eyewitnesses claim that there were multiple shooters.” No children killed in the attack.
2:29 – 2:38 PST – The shooter is being named as a 39 year-old Major named Nadal Malik Hasan. MSNBC doing everything possible to avoid calling this a terror attack, “even though the shooters name sounds Arabic.” Shepard Smith “The name tells us a lot.” Hasan was allegedly upset about being deployed to the Middle East.
2:22 – 2:28 PST – Fox relates that experts say the “shooter would have to be well trained to kill so many people so quickly with a handgun.” Networks starting to craft opinion. Fox talking about the “Fort Dix 6″, CNN leaning toward fatigue among soldiers. MSNBC calling it “anger.” No official word has been released from the military or FBI. Barry McCaffrey tells MSNBC that the attack was not impulsive, but planned.
2:08 – 2:20 PST – MSNBC, CNN and Fox all interviewing military experts. No new news. Texas Governor Rick Perry to speak at 2:30 PST.
2:01 – 2:08 PST – President Obama gave disjointed remarks about the tragedy during a speech to Native Americans. The President asks Americans to keep “Ft. Hood in their thoughts and prayers.”
1:50 – 1:58 PST – Press conference at Ft. Hood. 12 dead, 31 wounded. Military Police killed a U.S. soldier responsible for the attack. Two other soldiers are in custody. The incident happened at 1:30 CST. The 12 killed were at a deployment readiness center. A civilian police officer is among the dead.
No motive for the attack is known. The base is mostly secure according to Ft. Hood authorities.
