(YBH) – Haaretz.com is running the following headline tonight: “Muslim leaders to abandon plans for Ground Zero community center” with the sub-heading “Insiders say Muslim spiritual leaders behind the controversial initiative are considering giving up on the former World Trade Center location, in a gesture of appeasement.”
The controversial center, just a stones throw from Ground Zero, made headlines this weekend when President Obama effectively backed the mosque construction during a dinner celebrating the beginning of the Muslim holy season of Ramadan at the White House.
According to a CNN poll fully 68% of the American public is against a new mosque being build so close to Ground Zero. Proponents of the Islamic center have attempted in recent days to paint Americans against the mosque as being bigoted. Few, if any, prominent Americans against the Ground Zero mosque have outwardly called for the banning of all mosque construction in the United States.
Senate Democrat leader Harry Reid came out against the mosque today. Mr. Reid is known for being a loyalist to Mr. Obama. For him to go against the President on this issue is a sure sign that the Democrats are split on this issue.
The proposed site of the mosque, 51 Park Place in Lower Manhattan, was damaged during the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and until that point was a Burlington Coat Factory department store.
