(YBH) – As a self-professed news junkie, one of the main things I do to get a “hit” is read the comment section of news websites.   I found the following list of President Barack Obama’s purported accomplishments since taking office in 2009 on one of them.  Since, I’ve seen this list many times.  As a matter of fact, according to Google, somebody or a group of people have posted it in the comment section of over 2,200 different articles.

Parts of the list are correct and others parts are flat-out false,  while other claims are so broad they would be tough to justify.

Does one person spend all of his or her time copying and pasting this list into the comment section of articles, or is it an organized effort?  I’m curious to know.

The list:

1. Ordered all federal agencies to undertake a study and make recommendations for ways to cut spending
2. Ordered a review of all federal operations to identify and cut wasteful spending and practices
3. Instituted enforcement for equal pay for women
4. Beginning the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq
5. Families of fallen soldiers have expenses covered to be on hand when the body arrives at Dover AFB
6. Ended media blackout on war casualties; reporting full information
7. Ended media blackout on covering the return of fallen soldiers to Dover AFB; the media is now permitted to do so pending adherence to respectful rules and approval of fallen soldier’s family
8. The White House and federal government are respecting the Freedom of Information Act
9. Instructed all federal agencies to promote openness and transparency as much as possible
10. Limits on lobbyists’ access to the White House
11. Limits on White House aides working for lobbyists after their tenure in the administration
12. Ended the previous stop-loss policy that kept soldiers in Iraq/Afghanistan longer than their enlistment date
13. Phasing out the expensive F-22 war plane and other outdated weapons systems, which weren’t even used or needed in Iraq/Afghanistan
14. Removed restrictions on embryonic stem-cell research
15. Federal support for stem-cell and new biomedical research
16. New federal funding for science and research labs
17. States are permitted to enact federal fuel efficiency standards above federal standards
18. Increased infrastructure spending (roads, bridges, power plants) after years of neglect
19. Funds for high-speed, broadband Internet access to K-12 schools
20. New funds for school construction
21 The prison at Guantanamo Bay is being phased out
22. US Auto industry rescue plan
23. Housing rescue plan
24. $789 billion economic stimulus plan
25. The public can meet with federal housing insurers to refinance (the new plan can be completed in one day) a mortgage if they are having trouble paying
26. US financial and banking rescue plan

28. Ended the previous policy; the US now has a no torture policy and is in compliance with the Geneva Convention standards

I would say that President Obama has and is accomplishing a great deal for our country. I am happy that there are people (like you John Romano) who take the time to list them. I feel that since the 2008 election, more Americans are paying attention to what is going on in our government due to the interest in Obama whether it be to support him or discredit him (which is extremely hard to do). Hopefully, people will stay informed and involved and avoid complacency.

I'll give credit where it's due for President Obama: maintaining the Bush admin's overall tenor on the war on terror. Sure, President Obama's got a major phobia when it comes to saying the word terrorism (except maybe when referring to the members of the Tea Party movement), but he's kept up the commitment of his predecessor admirably enough for this citizen. That he's learning his decision to carry on the terrorist trials in NYC may not be the most savvy thing to do also gets him props in my book.

However, as Mr. Romano alludes to by mentioning the lies, half-truths and broad-strokes of the above list, listing "visited more countries" and speaking as if rescuing the US Auto industry was a positive are claims as hollow as slapping "historic" or "unprecedented" in front of every last breath this president and/or the previous Congress takes/took. In just these two instances, the more important facts to examine are how much of the world looks at us less respectfully even though the President touched their soil, notably our (formerly?) staunchest allies in Britain (way to cite the French as the "new #1," Mr. President), and how Ford's refusal to take the government hand-out proved to be the better road to recovery, allowing the company to fail before picking itself up and eventually turning a much bigger profit than either Chrysler or GM. My grandfather turns again in his grave for me speaking in glowing complimentary tones of Ford (it's a US company, Papa, please relax).

Finally, Rosa, discrediting President Obama is actually far easier than you think. Case-in-point #1: allowing his Attorney General Holder to get away with political murder by not prosecuting the New Black Panther Party for their 2008 election day voter intimidation tactics in Philadelphia. Abominable. Case-in-point #2: constantly referring to the growing dissatisfaction with his health-care plans in the US, and across party lines no less, with outright condescension. He works for We the People, not the other way around, a lesson demonstrated quite clearly last November. Now if only Republicans in Congress (aka the controller of the purse-strings) would finally learn not to retreat from a superior position and responsibly remind the President of that fact. See Mr. Romano's "Per Usual…" column for more on that.

I could go on, but A) I don't want to bore you (or anyone) and B) both the Steelers and Packers won today and I'm a great mood for the Super Bowl. Why wreck that?
