Is It Martha or Marsha? Kennedy Flubs Coakley’s First Name

BOSTON (YBH.ME) – Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy was on the stump tonight for Martha Coakley. The problem is the Democrat Congressman, who happens to be the late Ted Kennedy’s son, continually referred to Ms. Coakley as “Marsha”, instead of Martha, during a post-rally press conference.

Patrick Kennedy: Vote for "Marsha" CoakleY!

Patrick Kennedy pitches for "Marsha" Coakley in Massachusetts.

The race for Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat had long been a foregone conclusion for Democrats, until two weeks ago, when the national press began to focus on the Massachusetts race in earnest. Scott Brown, Ms. Coakley’s Republican opponent, has been polling ahead of Ms. Coakley lately, and for the has been gaining momentum over the last week. The fact that a Kennedy would refer to Ms. Coakley as “Marsha” instead of “Martha” may add to the narrative that Ms. Coakley is out of touch with Bay State voters. Two days ago, Ms. Coakley mistakenly referred to former Red Sox pitching great Curt Schilling as “another Yankee fan” to the Boston media. Mr. Schilling has been a mainstay of the Brown campaign around the state in recent days.

Massachusetts voters head to the polls on Tuesday to find a permanent replacement for the late Ted Kennedy. Whoever wins will have to run for re-election to a full six year term in 2010.

To make this situation even better, when introducing Senator John Kerry, Obama forgot what state he was in. This is no exaggeration. He hesitated for several seconds clearly trying to remember what state Kerry was from (um, the state where you are?), then stated "Massachusetts, yeah, we all know where we are!" It is simply incredible. One could not craft this any better/worse depending on your perspective. You cannot make this up.
