HUNTSVILLE (YBH) – Dr. Amy Bishop, a Harvard-trained neuroscientist, is reportedly under arrest for the Friday afternoon shootings at the University of Alabama at Hunstville’s Shelby Center. The shootings left three dead: G. K. Podila, the Biology Department’s chairman; Maria Ragland Davis; and Adriel D. Johnson Sr.. Two additional biology professors, Luis Rogelio Cruz-Vera and Joseph G. Leahy, as well as a professor’s assistant, Stephanie Monticciolo, are in Huntsville Hospital with minor to life-threatening injuries.
Dr. Bishop had appealed a decision denying her tenure, and been turned down. According to the New York Times, an unnamed colleague stated “she began to talk about her problems getting tenure in a very forceful and animated way, saying it was unfair.”
Dr. Bishop and her husband, in 2006, had developed and patented a new apparatus for growing cell cultures, improving on the centuries-old Petri dish.
