KEARNY, NJ (YBH.ME) – The race for Governor in the Garden State took a turn south, with what many are calling below the belt tactics by incumbent Jon Corzine’s campaign.

Jon Corzine, New Jersey's embattled Governor.
Mr. Corzine, trailing in the polls, has released an ad that seems to mock his opponent front-runner Chris Christie’s weight.
New Jersey political races are no bush-league affair. The Garden State is long known for its hardball races and underhanded campaigning by both Republicans and Democrats.
Republican Chris Christie, a former Federal Attorney, has focused on Mr. Corzine’s record and New Jersey’s high taxes and projected $8 billion deficit. Of course, Mr. Corzine’s policies are not responsible for the entire deficit, the economy has played a huge role, and New Jersey is heavily dependent on tax revenues from Wall Street. Regardless, polling suggests that Mr. Corzine has been an ineffective leader. Corzine, a Democrat, was the former head of investment banking giant Goldman Sachs.
The New Jersey gubernatorial election is November 3, 2009. New Jersey along with Virginia are the only two states electing governors this year. Political watchers will judge the results as an early test of Barack Obama’s success in office and perhaps a foretelling of the 2010 congressional races.
