The press is gaga over Barack Obama’s debate performance at the Republican House retreat yesterday.  Leave aside that the GOP went out of its way to invite the President, and even agreed to have the meeting televised at the President’s request.  What matters to some is not that the GOP opened its doors to the President, but that Obama scored a few points out-talking the Republicans.

Obama meets with House Republicans.

So what’s next?  Obama out-debates the minority party in Congress over an hour; America rolls over and accepts socialism?  Me thinks not.  The American public still can’t stand his health plan and moves to centralize and vastly expand government.

Yesterday’s “drubbing” of the Republicans is the beginning of a new media assault to prop-up Mr. Obama.  Look for a new poll or two in coming days from the usual sources claiming a turn-around for the Democrats and Mr. Obama in particular.  Did anything materially change?  No.

The problem for the Democrats is that they sincerely believe in the greatness of Obama.  If the American people just see how clever he is, they will stop all opposition and follow the newly elected King.

If Obama were serious about changing the tone in Washington, D.C. he would have shown up yesterday looking to bridge the ideological divide.   Depending on your perspective yesterday was either:

While watching the State of the Union address the other night, I was taken with the fact that Obama would be much more comfortable as a dictator.  If he could impose his will on all of us perhaps his agenda would work in the short run.  America is not yet interested in a dictator, and hopefully never will be.

I don’t say the former to be divisive, but it truly hit me that Mr. Obama would be much happier with no opposing party in his way.  A lifetime in academia and Chicago politics doesn’t really prepare one to be respectful of Republicans.  President George W. Bush was a bit like this during his first term.  Reality and an actual drubbing at the polls changed all that.

If Obama doesn’t get it or “get over it”, he will be doomed to a four year reign over a divided country that will be all too happy to send him packing in 2012.  MSNBC and others will do everything they can to diffuse an electoral time bomb, but if the Democrats fail to push their leader to the American center they will lose bigger than they expect.  With Harry Reid and Nancy “A Leader God Has Blessed Us With” Pelosi at the helm, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
