(YBH) – Call it an old-fashioned political boxing match. Someone is lying. Who will blink first? And who will take it on the chin? In the video below, you will see Arizona Senator Jon Kyl tell a small audience that the President is holding border security back in an effort to win Republican backing for his comprehensive immigration reform bill. As Mr. Kyl states the President said, “If we secure the border you all won’t have any reason to support comprehensive immigration reform.” Mr Kyl then said, “In other words they’re holding [border security] hostage. ”
White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer flat out called Senator Kyl a liar, stating that, “the President didn’t say that and Senator Kyl knows it.”
Senator Kyl was speaking to a group of Tea Party folks in Phoenix. The video first aired this weekend and has been picking up steam in conservative and mainstream circles. Rush Limbaugh, Politico, and Fox News have all focused on the story this morning. Senator Kyl also said of Democrats, “They don’t want to secure the border unless and until it is combined with comprehensive immigration reform. They frankly don’t want to do it. They want to get something in return for doing their duty.” Murmurs of the word “amnesty” can be heard from the crowd in the background.
Senator Kyl has yet to respond to the White House accusation that he is playing loose with the facts. We can look for one of two things in the near future from Senator Kyl : a bold response or an apology. It should not be omitted as a factor in Kyl’s political calculations that he is the #2 ranking Republican in the Senate, behind only Kentucky’s Mitch McConnell.
