(YBH) – Even though the President has attempted to walk back the hype over the impact of sequester cuts to the federal budget that were enacted today, his website still maintains that “More than 4 million homebound seniors” won’t receive meals.
No explanation is given as to what cuts specifically will cause over 1% of the American population to starve, but the note is included in a graphic entitled “If Congress Fails to Stop Severe Spending Cuts by Friday“. The site then implores people to share with them “how these cuts COULD affect your family” (emphasis ours).
The administration has been criticized by many conservative media outlets and, surprisingly, more than a few sympathetic liberal ones as well for over playing the impact of the sequester cuts. If fully implemented, the federal budget in 2013 would still be $15 billion larger than last year. For instance, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan claimed that teachers in one school district already received “pink slips” due to the looming sequester. In reality the lay-offs were a local issue and had nothing to do with the sequester. This fact became clear when the Washington Post investigated Mr. Duncan’s claim. Hopefully, someone will do the same over Mr. Obama’s websites claim that more than 4 million elderly people will starve because of the sequester.
