(YBH) – As most readers know, I lean conservative. I also think that the GOP taking at least the House of Representatives in November would be great for my party AND the country. Divided government works best in America. Democrats, many of whom hate Republicans, will rediscover their lost notion of “dissent being patriotic” and the left/right dance will continue in earnest. For now, Obama and the Democrats are dancing alone with absolute power. It hasn’t been pretty.
Simply, the President is in terrible danger of wandering into Jimmy Carter land. The true Obama faithful couldn’t be unswayed on Mr. Obama’s greatness if the President revealed that he wanted to institute Sharia law in the United States, starting with stripping all women of their college degrees and putting every female over age 17 in a burka stat. The faithful would find a way to say that Mr. Obama was doing it for our own good. The 85% of us not imbibing Obama kool-aid would like to have a President in charge. If we disagreed with his/her policies, at least we’d respect the office and its holder. Like Mr. Carter before him, Barack Obama is near that point of no return.
Regardless of the outcome in November, the President himself needs a career saver. As loathe as I am to admit something that will help the Democrats, I have an observation that could help save Mr. Obama’s hide.
Sometimes the obvious answer is the right answer, and usually a simple one. I put forth that Mr. Obama should pledge to get the World Trade Center complex rebuilt within six years. He should make it his own personal jihad (as opposed to his current one of running up the U.S. deficit. I jest of course!) to personally oversee the construction and rebirth of the World Trade Center and the nation. Whether the President is a one-termer or double run guy, he should make it clear that his commitment to the project will outlast his time in office.
The hole caused by the followers of Islam in downtown Manhattan has yet to be fixed. We as a nation need it done. It is a matter of national pride. When Kennedy promised a moon mission to New Mexico (again, I jest!) he was calling for the nation to exercise its national pride and know-how. Mr. Kennedy dared the Russians to try and beat the U.S.A. to the moon. That call was not answered. In one swoop Mr. Kennedy declared and proved that the American system of governance was far superior to the command and control efforts, with its dearth of freedoms, of the U.S.S.R.
It is time again for such leadership.
Mr. Obama and the Feds can cut through any supposed remaining roadblocks standing in the way of the project like butter. If they can bail out the banks, seize and recapitalize Chrysler and GM, and get BP to pony up $20 billion without going to court, they can handle the stakeholders and politicians in New York. All it takes is leadership, and dare I say community organizing. The President needs to personally address whatever issues are holding back the project from running at full steam to completion. Even if the tower’s occupancy will run at half capacity for a time, the President needs to guarantee that the stakeholders will not lose their shirts on the endeavor. He must make it our national mission.
As Mr. Bush stood on the rubble nine years ago carrying a megaphone, Mr. Obama needs to be there wearing a hard hat! The nation needs it. The victims of 9/11 need it desperately. Moderate Muslims around the world need it to cleanse their hands of what their jihadist brothers did in their name. Mr. Obama needs it. And lastly, I need it. I’ve had a hole in my heart for ten years.
When Mr. Obama speaks next week to mark the anniversary of the terrorist attack. I pray that he would heed my words above. Who knows? Stranger things have happened.
