Lance deHaven-Smith, The Battle for Florida (University Press of Florida, 2005) is probably the final word on the count and the fact that the GOP--facing fundamental demographic shift in Florida that were not to their benefit--mounted an aggressive legal strategy aimed at not counting votes. This, of course, doesn't excuse Gore's poor performance in his home state and elsewhere as factotrs in his "loss."

The GOP one-upped the Dems by not even allowing the votes to be counted so that they could then be overturned. John Romano at 11:21am May 7 In which election did we see a Democrat in the lead and GD got it switched to the Republican candidate? John Gutierrez at 11:26am May 7 Bush v. Gore comes to mind. In any event, the NJ decision to allow Lautenberg to replace Bob Torricelli had little to do with party and a great deal to do with precedent in NJ law going back to the 1950s (a time when the state was still something of a Republican bullwark). We'll continue this on the blog. John Romano at 11:30am May 7 When did Gore have the lead? I think B v G 2000 was the test case for the three examples I laid out.

YBH Writer John Gutierrez started the following discussion about my latest BH piece on Facebook:

John Gutierrez at 11:08am May 7
So Perkins Coie is the Democratic version of Gibson Dunn?

John Romano at 11:21am May 7
In which election did we see a Democrat in the lead and GD got it switched to the Republican candidate?

John Gutierrez at 11:26am May 7
Bush v.
