President Tells Glenn Beck Fans to Try The Huffington Post. Good Luck Mr. President.

During a commencement speech at the University of Michigan today  the President urged fans of Glenn Beck to give the Huffington Post a try.   He also implored readers of The New York Times to give the WSJ a shot.  The NYT and WSJ are natural crossovers.  But what about Beck and Huffington?

Although I don’t watch Glenn Beck, I’m well aware of his show and its frenetic format.  I’m also very familiar with the Huffington Post (just look at the sidebar).

Arianna Huffington: Bias you can bank on.

The difference in my mind between the two, besides the fact that Mr. Beck hosts an hour long show on FOX and the Huffington Post passes as a bonafide full service news outlet,  is that Glenn Beck doesn’t even attempt to hide his anger and, yes to a degree, paranoia of the opposition.  That is much different than Ms. Huffington’s organization.  The Huffington Post feigns objectivity, but never fails to skew a story toward the Democrats.   If a story can’t be spun in the favor of the left, The Huffington Post often ignores the story altogether.

Ms. Huffington’s website has begun issuing certain loyal users the title “Superuser”.  Superuser’s are the cream of the crop, the devotees of Ms. Huffington’s army of believers, without whom The Huffington Post would not have White House press credentials.  Quite frankly, their daily comments at the end of opinion and news articles are as hateful as anything that has come out of the right.

Here are some examples of comments made today by some of these folks on The Huffinton Post.  Remember, these are the people The Huffington Post honors on their website:

On immigration reform:

Republicans are the biggest employers of illegal immigrants in America. Republicans don’t believe in the minimum wage or giving rights to workers… that’s why they love exploiting these people who simply want a better life for themselves and their families. It’s ironic that Republicans are trying to bite the hands that pick their tomatoes.

Immigration and hatred of Republicans:

Not only do I want ILLEGAL immigration stopped, I want the leadership of the republican party deported too!!!!  I don’t like the democrats either, I’m ANTI-INCUMBENT, but I really HATE the republicans.
About the Sarah Palin email “break-in” case:
If Paylin was a real Christian she would plead for mercy for this young man. We all realize he isn’t a threat to society or to PAYlin either for that matter. We would all be better served if she practiced better security on her devices and understood a college prank when she saw one. This was not international spy activity. This was invasive spare time amateur hacking. Community service and fine is all he deserves. PAYlin should for once take the high road, drop her self centered conceit, and understand somethings are more important than camera mugging for more cash.
And another:
Once again Palin shows the nation that she is still the “Dumbest Woman in America”..
..
comparing hacking of private email to the ‘B& E’ of the DNC, a national political organization, during Watergate…. her perpetrator was not a political operative, he was a stupid kid!!!!!

Either Palin is over-the-top stupid, or she is example #1 of “extreme” narcissistic disorder…

My guess…Both!

These examples are just samples of the thousands and thousands of comments made on The Huffington Post each day.  The point is, leftist attacks on the right in the public forum are as hateful and uninformed as whatever the “teabaggers” are accused of on a daily basis in the media.  The above shows it cuts both ways.

What about Glenn Beck you ask?

The Glenn Beck story is a little different.  Mr. Beck, a recovering alcoholic, is more of a showman than Ms. Huffington, and possibly P.T. Barnum, for that matter.   While the Huffington Post misrepresents the truth by omitting or distorting facts, Glenn Beck does it in a loud and proud manner.  Some of his comments about the President have been over the top.  In addition, Mr. Beck’s brand of “news” has found its audience and has largely maxed out.  This works for both Mr. Beck and FOX News, by the way, who are making a mint off Mr. Beck’s commentary.  An interesting aside is that The Huffington Post, and the left in general, had nary a word to say when Mr. Beck was on CNN.  His show hasn’t changed much, just his brand affiliation.

In the end, in an attempt to “open minds” , the President asked moderate Democrats to switch to a moderately conservative newspaper.  He also asked far-right-wingers to try on the looniest-of-left-wing websites.  It would have been interesting if the President had asked Huff Po users to give good ole’ Glenn Beck a whirl.  I’d pay to read the comments on The Huffington Post after that.   However, as with all things, the President was playing politics.  He wouldn’t dare ask his base to watch a “wing-nut” like Glenn Beck.  A politician’s notion of fairness inevitably favors voters on their side of the aisle, just the way it works.  Asking Beckers’ to read Ms. Huffington is a safe move.

If more than two people actually take the President’s advice, I’ll eat my hat.

Huffington Post was ultra biased against Hillary Clinton as well. Without Huffington Post, Keith Olbermann, Oprah Winfrey and Michael Moore, plus all of that mysterious cash, caucus cheating and the shenanigans involving Illinois, Michigan and Florida, Hillary Clinton would have been the nominee and probable president.

However, who on the conservative side is for financial reform? On Huffington Post, bloggers get an opportunity to report on financial reform, what about on the conservative side?

I pop in at the Huffington Puffington Post once in a while.
It's a "keep your enemies closer" kind of strategy and to geta feel for what the Left is fomenting.

I can't stay long, though because my blood pressure starts to rise and some ofthe postings are so fowl and deranged that I feel like a shower is in order afterward.

I found the "p"resident's comments were laughable to me.

He wants to control everything that everyone does- including what they watch and read.
If that's not totalitarianism, I don't know what is.

I agree with you on some points and disagree on others… for instance… "The Huffington Post feigns objectivity, but never fails to skew a story toward the Democrats." I do think this is true.

However, I disagree with this, "If a story can’t be spun in the favor of the left, The Huffington Post often ignores the story altogether." That's simply not the case. If you spend a lot of time on the site you'll find that absolutely anything that is being discussed in the news cycle is referenced on Huff Post. If it's not on the front page, it's in their indexed section. And they've taken Democrats to task on several key liberal issues, like financial reform and big-bank bailouts.

The truth of this post it is that it's as guilty of hyperbole as anything it attacks. The president was talking about diversifying your media input. The American news cycle is in serious trouble. We've trained the population to seek out news that agrees with their views instead gives them a full, rational, deconstruction of all sides of an event or argument. Huffington Post is far from exempt from this, and so is everyone else. The POTUS didn't say stop watching Glenn Beck, he said, give the other side a try.

As far as celebrating the leftists barkers in their comments section, they're just trying to nod to the people that comment the most so they can create some kind of brand loyalty. For better or for worse. It's only natural that the people who comment the most are the most fervent. And as far as I can see Coolpillow above me is just as myopic, unsophisticated and reductive as any example you've given.

At this point, everyone is part of the problem and that's bad for democracy. I simply can't take issue with a leader who says, "Hey, look beyond your personal bias and see what happens". Apparently there are others who find that to be totalitarianism. Perhaps some time with a dictionary is in order.

Define incendiary speech and what could be the results?
Does the editorial of Huffington post encourage incendiary writings?( this you have to be at least literate to participate)
Does Beck ,Palin and Limbaugh encourage and speak incendiary remarks, ?(here you don’t have to be literate to participate)

I was just about to comment on coolpillow's comment when I read your reply. Great post I couldn't have said it better. I'll add this though. I think the author either misunderstands Huffington post's social news system or chose to misrepresent it. Superusers are ranked by the frequency of commenting or sharing they engage in, not the quality of their comments. There is also a site badge for networkers for those readers who collect large numbers of fans or followers. While neither badge implies any quality on the part of the comments or Huffington's post's attitude toward those users, Those with high networking scores usually engage in better quality posts similar to your post here rather than the vapid comments used to support the author's points (If this were Huffington Post I would have "fanned you" for this comment). Regardless of what people think about the liberal leaning of the site content, Huffington has done a great job at incorporating next generation commentary on their site. The criticisms of both the Presidents remarks and Huffington Post presented here ring hollow.

Huffington post is more pro-Obama than liberal. But Republicans ARE hateful (the Democrats are trying catch up, though). The dissent from the Right focuses on faux issues like Obama bringing America to socialism when Obama is a darling to Wall Street, the Health-insurers, Big Pharma and the oil companies; he's actually governing from the center-right. The Right's dissent is bogus; they stir up hate to appeal to the hoi polloi via Obama being a black Democrat and the only reason they do this is because they want to get back in power. Republicans want to regain power, not to govern more efficiently, but to line up lobbying jobs for themselves and their families.
