WASHINGTON, D.C. (YBH) – President Obama held his first press conference in nearly a year today.  The one hour presser dealt mostly with the devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  Toward the end of the press conference Mr. Obama was asked by Fox News about the Joe Sestak affair.  The President said that the White House would be offering an “official response shortly” on the matter and refused to deal with the controversy further.  No other news outlet broached the subject with the President.

Congressman Joe Sestak

The Democratic Congressman, and now nominee, for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania told the press last winter that the White House had offered him a job in return for not running against current Senator Arlen Specter.  Mr. Sestak did not say who offered the job or what the job would be.  Media reports claim that Mr. Sestak was offered a job as Secretary of the Navy.

Mr. Sestak ran anyway and defeated Mr. Specter in last week’s Pennsylvania Democrat primary.

Conservatives see a real chink in the Obama administration’s armor here.  If the White House in effect calls Mr. Sestak a liar and claims no job was ever offered, they risk a loss in Pennsylvania in November.  If the White House admits a job was offered the President potentially opens himself up to a “Watergate” style investigation.

Republicans have called for a special prosecutor into the affair.  The White House has to date ignored this call.
