(YBH) – The AP leads this morning with the following quote in regards to General Stanley McChrystal:
The commanding general’s disrespectful remarks about President Barack Obama and his team are the latest setback for a nine-year war rocked by rising casualties.
The AP is referring to Mr. McChrystal’s comments in Rolling Stone. The problem is, there is no quote in the Rolling Stone article directly attributed to Stanley McChrystal about the President. The closest thing to a quote is when General McChyrstal references the fact that he thought the President was intimidated by military leaders during his first encounter with them early in his presidency.
Over at The Huffington Post the headline for two days has been “READ THE EXPLOSIVE COMMENTS FROM ROLLING STONE“. Upon reading the article, it is clear nothing in it can be construed as “explosive.” Out-of-line? Perhaps, but in no way beyond the pale.
The President summoned General McChrystal to Washington, D.C. immediately to discuss the Rolling Stone article. The pair met this morning. Afterward, flanked by Joe Biden and General David Petraeus, the President spoke publicly about the affair and fired General McChrystal. The President said his decision was not “out of any sense of personal insult,” but the best choice for national security.
General Stanley McChrystal has been replaced by General David Petraeus as the U.S. leader in Afghanistan. The Taliban applauded the Presidents decision, according to Fox News, calling it the “beginning of the end for the U.S. politically in Afghanistan.” The Karzai government, while accepting of Mr. Obama’s decision, had earlier warned against it.
