SOUTH AFRICA (YBH) – In an amazing turn of events, referees have disallowed another legitimate U.S. national soccer team goal at this year’s World Cup in South Africa.
Last week a referee, Koman Coulibaly, made one of the more bizarre calls in sports history. U.S. player Michael Bradley was literally hugged by a Slovenian player during a penalty kick. Maurice Edu, a rising U.S. player, scored anyway. Mr. Coulibaly inexplicably called a foul on Michael Bradley instead of the Slovenian player and disallowed the goal.
This morning during the U.S.A.’s do or die match against Algeria referee Frank De Bleeckere did essentially the same thing early in the game when U.S. star Clint Dempsey knocked in a cross to put the U.S. ahead 1-0. Mr. De Bleeckere called Mr. Dempsey offside. Video of the play showed that Mr. Dempsey was not in fact offside.
The U.S. defeated Algeria 1-0 to advance in the 2010 World Cup.
