Reports have surfaces that police killed five anti-government protesters in clashes that look set to escalate.  The most recent violence began when thousands of protesters defied a government warning and protested against the government during a Shiite day of observance, Ashoura.

Many in the crowd were yelling “Death to the dictator,” in reference to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.  The increasingly unpopular President was reelected to a second term earlier this year, in what opponents allege was a tainted election result.

What a pity! These are not official state police. They are sons Iranian people who are forced to spend their 18 months mandatory service in the police force. You can differentiate them from the official forces by the white lines on their trousers.
Iranian government is trying to make people confront people. Because it is not able to suppress the protesters by itself. It has encouraged ordinary people to confront whom it calls terrorists and destroyers.
