SAN DIEGO (YBH.ME) - The San Diego Police Department is under fire for purchasing a $27,000 military device that is used to control crowds.
The device called an LRAD, short for Long Range Acoustic Device, emits a high pitched squeal that can be used to control an unruly crowd. The U.S. Military currently uses such devices to control crowds of insurgents in Iraq.

San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore under fire over crowd control device.
San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore has been quoted as saying the LRAD could be used in place of pepper spray to calm out of control crowds. When pressed by a local San Diego television station Tuesday, the Sheriff’s department backed off of that statement.
Sheriff’s Department Spokesman Ed Musgrove told ABC affiliate KGTV that the device will only be used by search-and-rescue teams and warning residents during fires or floods. According to manufacturers, the device can be adapted for that purpose.
