SAN DIEGO (YBH.ME) -  The San Diego Police Department is under fire for purchasing a $27,000 military device that is used to control crowds.

The device called an LRAD, short for Long Range Acoustic Device, emits a high pitched squeal that can be used to control an unruly crowd.  The U.S. Military currently uses such devices to control crowds of insurgents in Iraq.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore has been quoted as saying the LRAD could be used in place of pepper spray to calm out of control crowds.  When pressed by a local San Diego television station Tuesday, the Sheriff’s department backed off of that statement.

Sheriff’s Department Spokesman Ed Musgrove told ABC affiliate KGTV that the device will only be used by search-and-rescue teams and warning residents during fires or floods.  According to manufacturers, the device can be adapted for that purpose.

Bill how much money did you waist on this piece of equipment? I think if we ask your Deputies what equipment is needed & is needed more often. Just another Ruby Ridge over over kill. I hope it is one of the first things your soon to be replacement will get rid of or let you take home so whine.
