NEW YORK (YBH.ME) – After dropping out of New York’s upcoming special congressional election on Saturday, Republican Dede Scozzafava has placed her support behind Democrat Bill Owens.

Scozzafava backs Owens.
Doug Hoffman, a conservative, has run a successful third-party campaign against both Scozzafava and Owens. The race has received national attention as the GOP brass backed the moderate Scozzafava over the conservative Hoffman.
Conservatives attacked Scozzafava and accused her of being more liberal than the moderate Democrat Bill Owens. The strategy has been very effective, as Hoffman has surged in the polls. The national Republican party stuck by Scozzafava until she withdrew on Saturday. The GOP is now firmly behind Doug Hoffman. Democrats see the whole affair as proof the GOP is rudderless.
New York’s 23rd is a Republican-leaning district. Republican John M. McHugh resigned the seat earlier this year in order to become Secretary of the Army.
