LOS ANGELES (YBH.ME) – Sean Penn’s controversial statement on Bill Maher’s HBO chat show:

“Every day, this elected leader is called a dictator here, and we just accept it, and accept it. And this is mainstream media, who should — truly, there should be a bar by which one goes to prison for these kinds of lies.”

Look for a retraction or an expansion of Mr. Penn’s remarks in coming days.  It would be hard to believe that Mr. Penn actually wants American journalists in jail for calling Hugo Chavez a dictator, but who knows?

Sean Penn is a big fan of Hugo Chavez.  Mr. Chavez rules his country with an iron fist.  Mr. Chavez plans on never leaving office.  Dissenters are routinely punished in the oil-rich South American country.  Sounds like a dictator to me.

To argue if Hugo Chavez is a dictator, we can just look at the definition of the word, “DICTATOR”: A person exercising absolute power. An absolute ruler. A tyrant, a despot.
Let’s look back at what Chavez accomplished on February, 2009, when he won a referendum to eliminate term limits, allowing him to govern indefinitely. President Chavez now controls the entire electoral process. We can examine the government schools in Venezuela, where children are indoctrinated in Bolivarian thought. How about television and media? The state has striped independence and dominates free television in the country. Venezuela, at every level is held captive to Hugo Chavez’ message. He “dictates” the direction of every man, woman and child. To dictate is to be a dictator. Not complicated to me. But then, I believe in free speech.
