SEIU President Andy Stern Logs 20 Visits To White House This Year

WASHINGTON, D.C. (YBH.ME) – Andy Stern, President of the Service Employees International Union, has visited the White House 20 times already this year.  Unions, who were big supporters of the Obama campaign in 2008, are pushing for a controversial bill called the Employee Free Choice Act.  Critics of the legislation claim that, if  passed in the form unions want, secret ballots would be obsolete when workers decide on whether to unionize.  Conservatives and business interests are strongly against the measure.  Unions consider the legislation paramount to their survival as membership has been declining over the past two decades.

The Obama administration has voluntarily released a list of 110 individuals who have visited the White House during the first nine months of this year.  The list includes a total of 481 visits by 110 guests.  The list released is only a partial view of who has been to the White House this year.  The administration has no legal reason to release the list.  Political pressure from Republicans and the press at large is another matter.

While the focus has largely been on the celebrities who have visited the President and First Lady, such as actor George Clooney and basketball great Michael Jordan, the list is dominated by politicians, union leaders, and business magnates.  Business leaders such as Bill Gates, Vikram Pandit, John Mack and Steve Ballmer are on the list.  In addition to the Democrat faithful, such as Howard Dean, Tom Daschle, and Dick Durbin, Republican Newt Gingrich was among the politicians who visited the Obama White House.

UAW President Ron Gettlefinger is not on the list.  Newly elected AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka has logged six visits so far this year.

No information on why each visitor was at the White House has been released.
