WASHINGTON D.C. (YBH.ME) – On Thursday, Senator Joe Lieberman needed another 30 seconds to finish a floor speech.  As presiding Chairman, Senator Al Franken said no.  A stunned Lieberman asked if he could request his fellow Senators if he could finish.  Again, “no.”  He settled for having his remarks read into the record, if not uttered on the floor, to which Franken agreed.

Franken Says Lieberman Out of Time

Senator John McCain, whom Lieberman supported for President in 2008 to the anger of his party, rose to say:

I must say that I don’t know what’s happening here in this body, but I  think it’s wrong. And so I — it’s fine with me that it be 10 minutes, but I’ll tell you, I have never seen a member denied an extra minute or so, as the chair just did.

Collegiality among Senators has a long tradition,  in danger of erosion by partisan acrimony over hot button issues.   Franken’s office defended the action, stating  “time limits were being enforced by Senate leaders rushing to finish a defense spending bill and get to the health bill.”

Glad to hear it. It's about time.

thank you AL, from all of us in cape elizabeth, maine . i applaud you , Joe Lieberman is a Judas ,(one who betrays).

  • Corrie

Would the two who commented, care to say where they attended College, and also what your major was.

    • Joe

Would Corrie care to explain why the information she requested is germane to the conversation at hand.

It is vital to the conversation. A strong education, if not good parenting, would instill a fundamental belief in allowing other opinions to be heard. Moreover I think it important to know the context in which the statements are being expressed.

A Ph.D would impress me and cause me to engage in a civilized discussion of why they hold such a belief.
A diploma in listening to their neighbor's rants earns you little respect or credibility for ANALYZING the situation.

I gave little care to your blind opinions. A learned perspective is what society and you should value. (Learned takes many forms, not just college education)

I am disappointed about this decision on two fronts. First that a honest opinion was not given a respectful extension of time, and second the excuse for the action was to RUSH through a bill. Why bother speaking at all? Perhaps we should just have votes, no need to think about our decisions. (That has worked in the past… Right. /sarcasm).

Senator Franken, Thank you for respectfully and yet directly cutting Lieberman's time limit. It made my day and I am relieved to have a Minnesota Senator "actively" dismiss Senator Lieberman… who is NOT concerned with representing the people of the United States but instead… is concerned with Joe Lieberman and keeping the private health industry funding his private coffers.

Just what I’d expect from Senator Franken. Senator Lieberman is a upstanding Patriot who is not afraid to cross party lines for what is right. If the people felt like they were not represented, they would not have re elected him after becoming an independent. Sen. Franken is a joke. And I believe the people of Minnesota will figure that out after only 1 term.
