KEARNY (YBH.ME) – With a stalled economy crunching several states and the nation, incumbent governors who rode on Obama’s groundswell may soon feel a backlash.  Case in point: the hotly contested New Jersey gubernatorial race.  The race has made for some quotable quotes which have been lighting up political sites and blogs.  The race has also drawn in political heavyweights on both sides of the aisle.

Christie to opponents: Let's talk weight. I dare you.

Christie to opponents: Let's talk weight. I dare you.

Some quotes:

  • From Republican Chris Christie, responding to personal attacks about his weight: “Man up — if you say I’m fat, let’s go, let’s talk about it.”
  • From ex-Republican, Independent candidate Chris Daggett, whom Rudy Giuliani accused of being a vote spoiler: “I’d ask him to withdraw from New Jersey,” he said. “I don’t know why he’s coming into New Jersey and trying to tell us how to run our state.”  Mr. Daggett did not offer similar words to President Barack Obama who has made several stops in New Jersey to pitch on behalf of Jon Corzine including two today.
  • And from Mr. Corzine, a Wall Street whiz who has dodged much scandal and not solved the state’s budget woes as promised: “Our best days lie ahead.”  With or without you, wonder voters?

Respected pollster John Zogby shows only 34 percent of likely New Jersey voters support the re-election of incumbent Governor Jon Corzine, with 40 percent projected to go for him, 39 per cent for Republican challenger Chris Christie, and 14 percent perhaps in the camp for independent, and former Republican, Chris Daggett.

Whispers in political circles have given life to rumors that Mr. Daggett is a plant for the Democrats.  No proof has been offered in this regard.  Mr. Daggett may indeed play the role of spoiler in the race.  However, voting experts note that, once in the booth, declared independent votes usually pull the lever for a mainstream party candidate.
