SOUTH CAROLINA (YBH.ME)  – Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Joe Wilson has spent his entire life in South Carolina except for a four year stint at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

Mr. Wilson has worked for both Senator Strom Thurmond and legendary Congressman Floyd Spence.  The ladder of which Mr. Wilson replaced in congress in 2002.  Mr. Wilson has four sons and four grandchildren.

Joe Wilson’s political philosophy and role in our current congress is summed up on his website, www.joewilsonforcongress.com, an excerpt:

In Congress, Joe serves as Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel. Additionally, he is a member of the Committee on Education and Labor and the Committee on Foreign Affairs. As a leader in Congress, Joe serves on the Republican Policy Committee and as an Assistant Republican Whip.

Joe remains committed to the principles of limited government and expanded freedoms. He has worked closely with fellow members of Congress in a bipartisan manner to promote energy independence, a strong national defense, and to rein in the size and power of the federal government.

Why the quick background on Joe Wilson?

Calling a sitting President a liar during a speech to a Joint Session of Congress is a very big deal, boorish, and dare I say, a bold move.  Whether Mr. Wilson likes it or not he is now part of the health care debate.

I hope he is prepared for what comes next.  I know his opponents are.

    Dear Joe Wilson,

Thanks for saying what we all thought. You are a courageous American.

    • Derek Hunt

Joe should be ashamed. His mother and teachers taught him better than to abuse his elected postion by insulting Congress, the President and all Americans by his outburst.
      Derek

    • steven

It doesn't take courage to be a moron.

    • Grant

      Dear Gracy

How very good of you to act as spokesperson for "all" Americans and what they think. That's quite the ego you obviously possess. Personally, I've never thought it was "courageous" to call anyone names, let alone the President of this country. By the way, if Mr. Wilson is a man of conviction with anything resembling a backbone, why did he apologize for his rude, childish outburst 20 minutes after it happened? How very courageous indeed.

  • Zypldot

Thank you Joe, Congress needs more people as honest as you are.

  • andrea

    his actions were shameful.

  • jaowinter

I hope when it comes time for your reelection, the radio stations refuse to play your ads…much the same way they refused to play the Dixie Chicks. You embarrassed our nation last night.

  • SCM

I am a Republican and am deeply angered by Joe Wilson's arrogant rudeness. The President of the United States deserves respect even when we disagree with him. I hope Wilson has a primary opponent to whom I can donate!

  • Michiganian

A boycott of Wilson's SC district which includes Hilton Head is in order.

  • Illinoian

These antics are simply juvenile, very sad and dissapointing to witness from a person in Joe's position. This kind of behavior sets the poorest example for any so-called leader, and frankly reflects poorlly on the judgement of those who put you him in office.

It's a sad day for this country when an a drug addict and an alcoholic has control of our airwaves and excite the public in following their agenda without any transparency as to who is backing them.

    • jim s

You do realize George Bush is no longer president don't you?

  • Brian crenshaw

ASHAMED? Yes he should be for apologizing for telling the truth. I am from S.C. and think it is time we stand for what we belive. Boycott SC what would we do, sounds like a answer to our problems in SC . You dont see us headed to Michigan . John C Calhoun never apologized for beating a senator with his cane in the senate and he also was a proud South Carolinan. GOD SAVE SOUTH CAROLINA

  • Paul in New York

The child that said the emperor had no clothes was also indiscreet and boorish and just as right, my only regret is that Joe backed down and apologized. No official has the right to lie in public and not be called on it. Obama lies and freedom dies. Retract your apology Joe and value freedom more than protocol.

  • Jim S

What ever happened to the Republican Party? There are some left that have a rational voice but mostly those voices are drowned out by the misinformed, the uniformed, the silly, and the nasty. Clearly, in South Carolina, the latter group has selected one of their own.

Last night our my family watched the President's speech and I felt as though I was witnessing history. Our kids watched with us and as we explained to them the form of our government, we could not help but take some pride in the grand ceremony. That is, until Congressman Joe Wilson of South Carolina tried to reduce the procedings to the level of a barroom brawl by shouting out "Liar" as the President explained the proposed healthcare plan. If this kind of approach and attitude is allowed to creep into the debate, we have no hope of producing the needed solutions to our pressing problems. Let's not stoop to that level.

  • A. Pikarsky

Mr. Wilson, if you run for President, I will be proud to work on your campaign. Thanks for shouting out the truth!

  • Doug

Obama said that illegal immigrants would not be covered. On what grounds is that a lie? Has Obama secretly said that he's going to sneak illegal immigrant coverage into the bill? Joe Wilson is an idiot, and this single act has done a great job of raising funds for his opponent.

  • Anne

Mr. Wilson, I suppose you are embarassed today when thinking what you did last night – don't be – I knew exactly how you were feeling at the time you said it. There are many of us out here who don't believe anything the man says there will be more and more of us as he keeps exposing his agenda. Just keep doing what you're doing and fight for what is right for the rest of us. Bless you

    • patty

      Agree

  • Patty

If i Understand the constitution correctly, if there is a national health care that would have to include EVERYONE on US soil. So indeed it was a lie as the President taught law he would know this.

  • Sucheslife

Perhaps it was a bit 'boorish' or uncouth' of Mr Wilson but for anyone with a bit of sense and common knowledge of what is going on in the present administration, Mr. Wilson was echoing frustrations felt by the multitude. How do you stop an administration who REFUSES to listen to the majority of the people who know that this bill is full of loopholes, a bill that is going to sink these Unites States of America. Mr. Obama says he is going to 'fix' Medicare and fund this new healthcare bill with the money that he reaps afer fixing Medicare. Suggestion….fix Medicare first, get the money FIRST, and then we'll talk. And, make sure that every single government worker, including the president of the UNites States is under this same health care bill. Good enough for us? Good enough for you. Another suggestion. ONLY fix what is wrong with health care. Do Tort Reform and Insurance company regulation first. Then see IF we need anything else. We just may not. That should take about 10-20 pages to write up…not 1000-1200 pages that nobody can or cares to read.
