Tonight, the New York Yankees won the 27th championship in the history of the franchise. Six of those were won with the Twin Towers gracing New York’s idyllic skyline.

Twin Towers in New York city.
In the year 2001 those towers disappeared. The Yankees lost the World Series that year in Arizona. My heart sank; I figured a World Series win would help the city heal. I had hoped it would help me heal too. It was too early. The Yankees fell in the bottom of the 9th in game seven to a scrappy Arizona Diamondbacks team. I always thought that Mariano Rivera, in some strange way, gave that game away. If even unconsciously.
In 2003, the Yankees made it to the World Series only to be bested by the Florida Marlins in six games. Then in 2004 the Yankees lost four straight, after winning three, against the Red Sox in the American League Championship Series. The best comeback in the history of baseball.
This year the Yankees were destined for success. You knew when A-Rod started getting post-season hits it was Yankees time. The Phillies didn’t stand a chance against a Yankees team that seemed to have found its purpose again.
9-11 has faded from the collective memory of the New York Yankees. They won the World Series. The rest of the city and nation will finally heal when something big, steel, dramatic and well, American, stands tall in downtown New York. The Yankees found their purpose again. It is time for the Federal Government and the City of New York to find theirs.
Let’s get it done.
